Maurice and Richard McDonald opened their first store in 1940 and their experiences led them to develop and introduce their innovative Speedee Service System in 1948 in San Bernardino, California. Six years later, Ray Kroc, a salesman of milkshake mixers, discovered their operation. Impressed, he convinced the brothers to give him a franchise for the Mid-West. Kroc opened his first store in 1955 in Des Plaines, Illinois.
