First, the British has no funds to spare for refurbishing the economies of the colonies. Malaya was to finance her own rehabilitation. Secondly, Malayans were forced to help the British Government to ride out the successive crises which beset the sterling area.Thirdly the sale price set by the British for Malaya's key commodities were considered by most producers to be artificially and unrealistically low. The British put great pressure on the Malayan economy by re-establishing the rate of exchange at the pre-war level of M$1 to 2s 4p. Finally British instructed Malaysia and Singapore to introduce an income tax.
